Rodney Okyere

April 2023 Academic Outstanding Student

Rodney Okyere is from Woodbridge, Virginia and he is a senior majoring in Computer Science, with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction. He is on a CGPA of 3.66. He says the best thing about being a black male student at Virginia Tech is having a community through organizations such as SAAB and BMEN, as well as being able to bring new ideas/ways of thinking into predominantly white spaces at VT. He says, growing up, he didn’t see many black males or people in engineering but during his time in NSBE’s pre-college initiative (PCI), he was able to spread the NSBE name and mission and expose students to engineering. Rodney’s post-Virginia Tech aspiration is to be financially stable and be able to pursue his passion in music. He wants to be able to balance and combine his computer science education with music. He also wants to be in a position where he is able to provide for his parents and younger siblings. His personal dream is to break into the music industry through producing or DJing while his career dream is to find a position in the tech industry, specifically in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. He would love to work in a company like Roblox or Microsoft and create immersive experiences for users.

Rodney is affiliated with SAAB as the President, WUVT as an On-Air FM DJ, SOHHL as an Official DJ, Clark Scholar (3rd Cohort). He says although he has never looked at specific individuals as role models, he tends to take more from people who have had struggles to get to where they are - He admires their perseverance and determination- and from those that fearlessly push boundaries in art. In his free time, he likes to read manga, hop in xbox parties with his friends, and DJ. When it comes to DJing, he practices transitions, makes mixes, and just has fun with friends.
