Michael Kalib Binyam

November 2023 Academic Outstanding Student

Michael Kalib Binyam is a sophomore majoring in Finance with a GPA of 3.91. He was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and moved to the United States around the age of 4, spending most of his childhood in Alexandria, Virginia before recently moving to Lorton, Virginia. As a family of five, he is the oldest of 3 with a younger brother and sister. He enjoys playing soccer and learning more about finance. Michael says that a fun fact about him is that he once had to get 4 stitches on his eyebrow on two different occasions on the same spot.

Michael says the best thing about being a black male student at Virginia Tech is the opportunity to interact and learn more about individuals who look like him, however, have a unique story to tell. He furthered by saying, resources available at Virginia Tech through programs such as the Black Male Excellence Network cultivates a space for him to grow in a professional, personal, and academic sense. He says that upon graduation, he plans to enter the workforce immediately, particularly within the field of finance as an investment or commercial banker. In addition, he aspires to join one of VT’s young alumni committees to connect with other former Virginia tech students and cultivate the Hokie relationships that last a lifetime.
