Black Male Excellence Network

Black Male Excellence Network (BMEN)

We aim to improve the academic performance, undergraduate experience, and graduation rates of Black male undergraduates at Virginia Tech.

Greetings,

On behalf of the BMEN at Virginia Tech, we write to you to offer motivation, hope, and guidance for this unprecedented academic year. For this year, we invite you to believe and invest in our motto of “WE BELIEVE.” As a member of BMEN we believe in the life, love, and liberation of Black menwe believe in academic excellence; and we believe in personal journey. Too many times over the past year, we have been inundated with images of Black death from state-sanctioned violence against Black bodies. We have either actively or passively participated in local, regional, and national protests. We have attempted to unlearn many aspects of our previous societal norms due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the end, we have hopefully learned that brotherhood remains the foundational thread to hold our community together. Join our network this year.

I am Dr. Michael R. Williams; I currently serve as the Assistant Director of the Student Success Center and the program director of BMEN. Our collective mission is to:

Empower Virginia Tech’s Black men by creating academic and social community through holistic development.
