Faculty Resources

“Faculty behaviors and attitudes affect students profoundly, which suggests that faculty members may play the single most important role in student learning.”

-Paul Umbach and Matthew Wawrzynski, Faculty Do Matter: The Role of Faculty in Student Learning and Engagement

Welcome!

Virginia Tech’s Student Success Center (SSC) values faculty partnership in our student success efforts. Supporting all 110 undergraduate programs, we need your partnership in promoting our programs across the Hokie learning community. The SSC provides a variety of innovative programs and events, and we look forward to working with you to better support students’ academic needs across disciplines.

Ways We Can Support You

Student Success Syllabus Statement: Consider including the SSC in your course syllabus by posting a syllabus statement (see sample below). Including a welcoming syllabus statement encourages students to utilize SSC services as a best practice in learning.

  • Sample Syllabus Statement: The Student Success Center helps students develop the skills needed to accomplish their academic goals and become self-directed learners. Their free services include individual and drop-in tutoring, peer academic coaching, a Seminar Series on Academic Success, and more. Our friendly undergraduate staff are outstanding academic role models who receive rigorous training and truly want to help. For more information, please visit studentsuccess.vt.edu.

Message Templates: Do you want advertisements or messaging templates to send to your students about our academic services (individual and drop-in tutoring, peer academic coaching, Seminar Series on Academic Success)? Let us know at studentsuccess@vt.edu and we can provide you with material to share with your class.

Ways We Can Support Your Students

The SSC offers a variety of services and programs to support your students. Becoming familiar with our programs is one of the best ways to raise awareness for your students. Our tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association, a global leader in tutor and peer education training in higher education institutions.

Tutoring: We provide individual tutoring appointments in over 50 courses, mostly 1000- and 2000-level STEM subjects. For some popular subjects, we also offer weekly drop-in tutoring hours, no appointment needed! See the full list of supported courses, including drop-in sessions.

Peer Academic Coaching: Our academic coaches can help students to strengthen their skills in time management, studying, note-taking, test-taking, active reading, overcoming procrastination, goal-setting, and more. Students can make an individual appointment to meet with a peer academic coach through Navigate.

Student Success Seminars: Our Student Success Seminars provide free, interactive, small-group presentations for students who want to develop their academic success skills. We focus on presenting research-based skills and strategies in an accessible way. Seminars are led by our friendly peer academic coaches, who are also available for individual appointments.

Peer Educator Training: Our SSC provides peer educator training for tutors, UTAs, and coaches. Need support with your peer educator training? Reach out to studentsuccess@vt.edu and let us know.
