Frequently Asked Questions
Peer Educator Academy: For Students
At this time, the modules are available only to faculty and students currently enrolled at Virginia Tech. Be sure you are logging into Canvas with your VT credentials, and let us know if you still cannot access the modules.
All peer education positions have different training requirements. Talk to your supervisor for details on the topics they require or suggest that you complete.
Peer Educator Academy: For Supervisors
You know your students’ needs best, so you are welcome to choose any training that would be relevant to their role.
To review your options, complete this Google Form to receive the self-enroll link to the Canvas site housing the training modules. The form confirmation will display the self-enroll link. Then review the module outlines to decide which modules best support your peer educators’ role.
Some topics may be required:
- FERPA training is required for anyone with access to student data or who interacts with students in respect to their success as a student.
- READ training is required for all employees, and it is strongly recommended for students who work with other students, particularly those in a position of authority in relation to other students; e.g., peer mentors, tutors, teaching assistants, volunteer members of the Rescue Squad, etc.
If you are not sure which topics to assign and do not already have existing training, we recommend having your students complete all modules in the Foundations of Peer Education along with relevant compliance training.
You have several options. Students can submit their completed worksheets, share a screenshot of their quiz score, or complete any of the suggested activities with each other or with you. Please choose any combination of verification that works best for you.
If you want our advice, we suggest asking your students to show that they got 100% on each quiz (they are open notes and can be taken as many times as needed) and to turn in a printout of their answers to the reflective questions. We also highly recommend discussing their reflective question answers with them and ideally completing any of the suggested activities that seem appropriate. Following up in this personal way will help customize the training to your particular needs, and it will help students apply the concepts they learned asynchronously.
If you are listed as the student’s supervisor in Banner:
- Log into PageUp LMS.
- Select My team on the navigation bar, then select Organizational chart from the drop-down. This should provide a list of your employees. If this list is not correct, please contact your HR representative.
- On each person’s card is a link to their Development plan. Select each tab to see what is on their development plan under In progress/Upcoming, Completed, and Pending Approval.
- If there is still a need to verify completion because Banner data is incorrect and you need to know prior to getting it corrected, please email Sarah Dreier.
If you are not listed as the student’s supervisor in Banner:
- To verify READ, email the Office for Equity and Accessibility at oeatraining@vt.edu. Larger in-person groups should consider having a supervisor attend synchronous training with their students and verify completion by observing.
- To verify FERPA training, students can either take a screenshot showing that they have successfully completed the training and/or you can email David Green to request that he verify their completion records.
Your students can self-enroll in our Peer Educator Training Canvas site. Please send them this short access survey, which will display the self-enroll link on the webpage after completion. You are also welcome to self-enroll to view the content.
We recommend Career and Professional Development's Career Readiness Toolkit. The toolkit is a collection of engaging modules and ready-to-facilitate activities designed for faculty and student leaders to incorporate and lead in their own classes. Modules can be embedded into your Canvas course.
Unfortunately, no—though this may be an option in the future, we cannot currently meet requests for synchronous training. These modules were designed to be asynchronous while encouraging interaction between you and your students. If you assign students to complete the quizzes, questions, and activities, and you discuss their positions with them in the context of what they learned, we feel confident that they will have a solid foundation for their peer education work. If you would like to see in-person training options in the future, please let us know.
