Summer Internship as a UC Berkeley Biological Research Intern. This internship was funded through the National Science Foundation’s REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program and was a highly competitive internship with over 800 applicants from around the country. While he is there, he will be studying infectious diseases and parasitology.

Joe Hughes III

Joe got his poem  "i die on your screen" selected as a top ten finalist in the 2023 Giovanni-Steger Poetry Award which is one of the nation’s most prestigious college writing contests. Furthermore, he blogs for WUVT’s magazine The Woove, where he published album reviews and a nonfiction essay about LA rapper, Earl Sweatshirt. In 2022, Apogee Journal, now a Whiting Award-winning publication, published my nonfiction essay "The Death of Oscar Proud as the Black Patriarch" in its 16th issue.


The aim of this recognition is to showcase black male undergraduates who have demonstrated rare commitment to their academic, professional and personal development success during their time in Virginia Tech.  

Nomination of students for this recognition is based on the following criteria:

Academics: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above at the time of this recognition 

Professional/Leadership Development: Students must have had a good number of internship experiences, recognized by organizations or volunteering engagements as at the time of this recognition
