Nana Yaw Barimah Oteng

March 2023 Academic Outstanding Student

Nana Yaw Barimah Oteng is from Ghana. He is a sophomore majoring in computer science and with a GPA of 3.92. He is truly fascinated with the countless possibilities that the world of software has to offer, and even more excited to know that he is only at the beginning of his journey. He says the best thing about being a black male student at Virginia Tech is that there is a strong black community at VT, and this made him never feel like he is alone. He says, there is always someone who has experienced your struggle before, and they are always readily available to help. His post-Virginia Tech aspiration is to work in the software engineering industry and his personal and career dream is to bridge the technological gap between Africa in the world. Growing up in an underdeveloped part of the world, he was surrounded by the inequalities experienced by the less privileged people. He believes the world of computer science is a vessel through which he can bridge this gap of inequality. Nana says his mother is his role model because he sees the struggle she goes through, and it encourages him to persevere in tough times.

Nana is part of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Black Student Association (BSA), African Students Association (ASA), and Students African American Brotherhood (SAAB). During his free time, he plays and watches soccer, and he enjoys playing the piano.
