College Success Strategies
The College Success Strategies Course (UNIV 1004) is a 3-credit (A-F) course. Course credit earned in UNIV 1004 cannot be applied toward graduation requirements. The credits earned will be used to determine full-time student status, financial aid, and other eligibility issues. This course is recommended for first-year students, transfer students, and students with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or lower.
This course is designed to empower students with the skills and personal qualities for creating greater success in college and in life. The course will help students clarify their goals and define what success means to them. In the end, students will know how to take charge of their academic courses by making wise choices and staying on track to achieve their goals. The course is interactive, incorporating regular discussion, hands-on activities, and out-of-class coaching appointments to help students grow and form a community within their classroom.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Discover personal values, strengths, opportunities, challenges, and barriers related to learning and academic success through structured reflective assignments.
- Write 2-3 measurable and realistic goals that they will pursue during the semester.
- Practice application of effective learning strategies to reach their goals, assessing and modifying the strategies based on reflection.
- Use the Peer Academic Coaching program to support their academic goals.
- Identify effective ways to interact with faculty and advisors.
- Demonstrate the integration of learning theories, strategies, and action as it applies to their own learning and educational goals.
